I still remember bringing this home from the record store. Big L hadn’t really dropped anything solo since his classic debut 3 years previous, but he did have outstanding guest appearances like his ones with DITC partners like OC & their banger “Dangerous” & his appearance on Diamond D’s “5 Fingas Of Death”. He had various other appearances like his tough cuts with indy groups like the N.O.T.S. Click. His appearances were never enough & always left you wanted more, immediately.
“Ebonics” was dope, it had Big L rapping on a concept and with a structure he hadn’t attempted before & had people fiending for that album. It was big news & had a lotta hype. His new Flamboyant Ent. label was being distributed through Fat Beats, which was king of the indy NY scene at the time and closer to what we were checking for. Various members of DITC were doing big things at the time, and they were dropoing 12”s left and right.
He had a new LP coming out on Rawkus, which had a roster that was killing everything at the time. Then, overnight, it was over. The promise, the potential, the hype, everything. Done.
Rawkus put out a hasty thrown together compilation LP with a bunch of throwaway tracks & subpar guest features that probably never would have made it if L had lived to see the release. There was a lot of disappointment and this 12”, “Ebonics” specifically, to me, showed the last of that growth and potential. Such a shame. RIP Big L.
