This past weekend (May 19th, 2012), I took a trip with Endo to the first Beat Swap Meet Las Vegas. Due to him bringing 21 boxes of LPs & 7”s, we drove up the morning before to get settled in and do some digging in Victorville and Vegas. After checking in & getting some quick naps in, we headed downtown away from the strip to the Beauty Bar and Insert Coins across the way. Beers were cheap at Beauty Bar and we drank for free at Insert Coins courtesy DJ Phoreyz. Phoreyz is a resident DJ at Insert and was a great tour guide the whole weekend, the highlight being the secret asada spot. On Point!
The next day was the Beat Swap, so we went to the Distrct early and scoped out the spot, got some asada and then went and loaded up the crates (boxes) and went back to the spot to set up. The Beat Swap itself was at the same spot as the Red Bull BC One qualifying Bboy battles, so the spot was crackin’. Nothing like LA, but solid the scene supported, showed love, and the vibe was right. Non-illegal open booze containers laws out there also added a nice element. I’m pretty sure the record sellers did alright, as most of the buyers were hungry for the type of product that was there. I came up on a couple joints, the highlight being the Isley Brothers/Jimi Hendrix In The Beginning LP for a buck. Some Cannonball/Axlerod 45s from Soul Zodiac, and a couple other joints. The vibe was right, the people were cool and a good time was had. Vegas, we will be back!
This is gonna be fun. I’m not the biggest collector of either of these labels, though I have a bit by default. CTI’s sister company, KUDU, ran & manged by the same guy, Creed Taylor, is off limits as well. I’m going to have to dig deep to try to bring a set’s worth of records for this, and bring enough extra in case some get played before I go on. Hopefully I can make it happen.
