Record Store Day was good to me. Spent a few hours around noon at the Artform Studio in DTLA & came up on some joints. It was a good time, a lotta heavyweights in the house. After that, I went and played Jazz records at the Last Bookstore for a couple hours. Good times all around.
This is the 2nd installment of Danny Holloway’s Blazing 45s night with legendary Philly DJ Rich Medina, Stones Throw’s Peanut Butter Wolf, Rhettmatic, Root Down’s DJ Expo, Danny himself and many more surprise DJs spinning all 45rpm-sets.
Need to try to make this one!

TONIGHT! Who’s rollin?
Beat Swap Meet #16 was it? I lost count awhile ago. During the lead-in and the weekend I was regretting a little bit staying at home, because LA had, in succession, Erykah Badu on Thurs, Spinna and J Rocc All 90s Party on Fri and then Madlib’s Medicine Show on Sat. I didn’t go to any of these because I wanted to save all my chips for Sunday’s Beat Swap.
In the end, it was a good decision. The vibe seemed real mellow, even though plenty of folks came through. It was also like a small reunion where everyone gathers together one last time before the holidays and the new year starts, so that aspect is enjoyable.
Top 5 moments:
1 - Young Guru (Jay-Z’s engineer) coming to my boy Endo’s booth when almost everyone had packed up. He ended up buying half a crate of records & chopping it up for a half hour or so, so that was really ill.
2 -Chopping it up with the homie Jawa (Scratch Academy tent), who had just returned from a 2-month trip to east Africa. He had been doing DJ workshops with the youth there for 2 months, in a warzone (Uganda, Tanzania & one more country I forget…Somalia?). At the end of his workshops, the kids performed what they had been practicing with some of Africa’s top pop stars.
3 - Digging for records at the same place Babu, Rhett & Revolution do.
4 - Fatlip performing ‘Passing Me By’
5 - (Finally) Getting clean OP copies of Ironman, Only Built For Cuban Links & a sealed Beats, Rhymes & Life for what the cost of one should be. My copies were partied out years ago, time to pass them on.
Big shouts to Percee P, DJ Ralph M (Funkdoobiest), GL Killer, Dibiase, Ras G, DJ Swamp, DJ Curse, Hen Gee & DJ Evil E (Ice T) for reppin & everyone else who rolled through.
